Question: Second interview with a senior manager...what will be new this time?

last time a had meeting with the direct supervisor(manager)
this time the meeting will be with person who my manager is reporting to.

What will be different this time?
What should be careful about?

why there is a need for a second interview?
is this going to be the final?

Answer:

The first interviewer likes you and has recommended you to his manager. Think about what was said in the interview and try to guess what the interviewer must've said to his boss. What would he have told his boss about you and how you can help the company? Reinforce those points in the second interview.

The differences will stem from perspective. The first interviewer's perspective is the part of the company he works in. The second interviewer's perspective will be a larger chunk of the company (or the whole company is he's far enough up the chain). People are focused on their own areas of responsibility, so this is what they want to talk about in an interview.

What should you be careful about? Emotions. Blaming other people, even if they deserve the blame. Being a superstar (most managers prefer team players rather than superstars). Any of the -isms (racism, sexism, ageism, etc.). Partisan politics.

There are several possible reasons for the second interview: #1 It's company policy. #2 The upper level manager is the final decision-maker, so he has an obligation to interview. #3 There is more than one suitable candidate. #4 They want to make sure they make a good decision.

There may be a third interview, but that usually happens only for more-senior positions. You didn't tell us anything about the position you are applying for, but if it's an entry-level position, there probably won't be a third interview.

Nothing new added, but expect a few curve questions - the upper management may be looking to replace your direct manager or have an agenda for a new hire. Just be relaxed, and answer questions as best you can - and know that probably no more than three other applicants have made it this far in the hiring procedure.
