Question: Is TESL a good career?
ive been looking into becoming a teacher of english as a second language, im just not sure if its lucritive enough. im not looking to become filthy rich. i just want to have a decent career... that and the fact i want people of other native languages to learn from someone trained to teach and not just paying hundreds of dollars to idiots who can barely chew the english language to teach others what they have basically picked up from subtitled movie, song and/ or on the streets... anyways i really do want to be able to teach abroad as well for example in the country where i was brought up in, the dominican republic, but more importantly japan... does anyone have any experience with this or know anyone who does? do they like what they do? has it been easy to find a job? is in the US or abroad? please help thanks
Answer:
Ok, if you're looking to make money out of TEFL then it most probably isn't going to happen. Starting off you get enough to rent a place and get out a couple of times a week and live reasonably well but you're not going to save a lot.
But people don't go in to TEFL for that. A lot of new teachers are there because they want to live and work in different countries around the world and experience life a little more!
