Question: Is it legal for Subway to do this?
I am trying to work at Subway. But because my GF is the manager at one of the Subways near where we live, the general manager won't hire me. The owner dude, owns 5 subways within a 50 mile radius.
The reason why the general manager won't hire me is because of my relationship with the manager. Is this a legit reason not to hire someone? I know that perhaps working at the same Subway as my GF would be a little weird, probably cause problems or whatever, but the owner has 4 other Subways where I could be put to use. I KNOW for a fact that they are in dire need of some extra help. They are the ONLY place hiring but need full time workers instead of part time (they prefer people who don't go to school... LIke uhh me!)
Is there anything I can say to persuade the GM? Or is this out of my hands? I really need a job and honestly, not being hired because of my GF, is silly. I don't have to work in the same Subway you know. Also, I have passed their test with flying colors, I have experience in customer service, cooking, cashier, stock boy etc. I am a good worker. Every interview I go to, I get hired. (Except lately, nobody is interviewing around here)
People like me. They really do. I feel like I should get a fair chance. I even told my SO that I would move out back to my parents, borrow their car, do anything so that it looks like we aren't together anymore and she replied that I still can't be hired for having been in a relationship with the working manager. ಠ_ಠ

Answer:
Totally legal, bud. It sucks, but conflict of interest. Also, it causes a lot of unnecessary stress on the employer, if it weren't. He'd have to explain it to his superiors the potential threat. It's just easier for him! Aint that a *****?
Just apply somewhere else. Best of luck!
Yes, It is very much illegal for Subway to do that. If you're scheduled to work at a specific time, then the legality of Subway is right to the consequences for lateness if terminations. If this is an on going occurrence, you may have a legal case against Subway. For more information you also try below the source link.
That is completely legit. It's perfectly legal for a company to have rules preventing relationships between employees, especially between managers and underlings
My brother lost his job because he got into a relationship with a girl in another office of the same company, not even the same building. But because the company had a rule against intercompany dating, he had to leave
