Question: I need advice and some guidance please?

Hi everyone. I'm just wondering if someone out there could help me. I'm studying in college doing film production. I went back to college as a mature student. I've worked in offices since I've left school but then I was made redundant so with my redundancy money I'm putting myself through college. I know nothing of this industry but have always been interested in it. It involves getting practise with camera's, lights, digital photography, production management, sound, video/sound editing software etc.

I'd like to get a job out of this course as it's a private college and I'm paying for it myself and I'm going to need a job badly when college is finished. I want to do video/sound editing and do foley. We've used final cut pro and sound track pro but I know I need more practise as I don't have an apple mac computer only a dell windows. My question is where can I go to get maybe a traineeship/internship/apprenticeship for a few months after college is finished.

I want to get as much practise and experience as I can so I'll get a job. What companies do this sort of thing. Are these companies called in house post productions companies or studios??? Who should I talk to, where should I start to look, post production companies, in house production companies? This is all new to me as I'm starting a new path in life. I also want to have as much as I can done for my show reel to show to these companies when I leave college. I live in Ireland. Thanks for the help.

Answer:

Many companies prefer someone who is certified in the editing application that they use, so if your current school does not offer Apple certification in Final Cut Pro, then you may want to find one that does offer the certification. The other editing application that is very popular for professional editing is Avid Media Composer. You may want to look into Avid certification as well. It wouldn't hurt to learn some Adobe applications such as After Effects and Photoshop.

Post production companies do have editors, so do production companies. TV editors have steadier work as movie editors usually work project to project.

The bottom line is to get Apple or Avid certified. Avid is currently more popular in TV, so you really may want to learn this. Check the Apple and Avid web sites for certification to learn more.
