Question: I'm 14 and I'm going to start a restaurant job?

I live in a small town and a restaurant owner contacted me via Facebook to hire me. I have experience in being a waitress but I'm SO nervous to start. I'm afraid if I screw up, I'll get embarrassed or something but I really need to make money so I can study abroad! :(

Answer:

Work on your customer skills. You are responsible to make sure your customers are taken care of so they will return. In any establishment customers appreciate it if they are assigned to a waitress who is presentable with good personality. To them it is comforting to know that they can trust their waitress with their food. So, always look clean and be pleasant at work. Everyone has issues and problems but leave it at home. Do this if you want to earn larger tips working at your waitress job.

Study the menu before you start your first day on your new waitress job. The duties of a waitress can be overwhelming. You are responsible for presenting and explaining the menu or daily specials to your customers. If you want to leave a good impression study the ingredients and texture of the dishes. This information will come in handy if your customer is allergic to specific spice, meat or fish. Don’t get insecure, you can do this! The dollar signs are soon to be in your pocket.

If you are a student or a new waitress with little experience it is best to work for a small establishment with moderate peak hours. A slower pace environment is good training. Listen to your manager and coworkers they may have tips and suggestions that may help. When you feel comfortable juggling tables, taking orders and your customers are happy you can resign. You can transfer to a bigger establishment. Don’t worry, establishment owners are use to it.

How to Be a Good Waitress Instructions

1 Smile. People like happy people and smiles are contagious. Customers who are paying for their food would prefer to have somebody who is smiling and in a good mood.

2 Refill cups before they become empty. Coffee and water can be hard to keep up on. If you grab the coffee pot or the water pitcher and make rounds with them every 10 minutes or so keeping cups full isn’t as hard as it seems. Customers do not like to ask to have their cups refilled.

3 Be friendly. Always speak to people with a friendly tone in your voice. Not only will they be more likely to be polite in return, but they also enjoy talking to somebody with a happy demeanor.

4 Move quickly. People like their food hot. The quicker you get it out to them, the warmer it will be when they bite into it.

5 Learn the menus. Some people aren’t sure what they want to eat when they come in. You can be helpful to them by suggesting things that they might enjoy.

6 Take orders accurately. Some people have allergies to certain foods. Overlooking something that they may have specifically requested or asked to be eliminated can be very hazardous to the customer.
