Question: How to tell Boss....I'm afraid of him...?
I started a new job 3 weeks ago. It really isn't what I expected. The environment isn't very professional. I work in an office with a group of men, and they are disrespectful and unsanitary. So
I'am looking for a new job as I work at the one I'm working now. Anyway I ended up getting in a fender bender on my way to work today, I had to have the car towed because the bumper was scraping against the back tire. My back was also bothering me so I called my boss and told him what was going on, he wasn't very nice about it. He was pretty short and told me to call him back after the police got there. I called him back an hour later and explained that I may go to the Dr. in the late afternoon since my back was bothering me, and I told him I could come into work for most of the day but have to leave to go see the Dr. He than told me to rest for the day and come into work tomorrow.
My problem? I have a dentist appointment next Wednesday that I have not told my boss about. I was planning on telling him on Friday, but now since I was out today, I'm afraid. He isn't a very nice person and I'm scared he will be rude or even fire me. Since I'm having heavy dental work I will not be into work the day of the appointment. I have been having pain in my tooth and I really shouldn't put it off.
What should I do?
Answer:
You should have told your boss as soon as you knew there was a conflict. Reschedule the appointment for as late in the day as possible and go into work early or skip a lunch break.
It's likely that he will let you go. Bosses hire employees to work, not to call out.
Never tell your boss that you are afraid of him.
I would first try to reschedule the appointment. Almost all dentists offer weekend or evening appointments. You may even be able to get the first appointment of the day and still make it into work on time.
If that doesn't work, you are going to have to tell him you've tried to reschedule but have been unsucessful. Give him at least a week's notice.
You are looking for another job, right? The boss is lacking in diplomacy, don't let him know you fear him or he will really explode. That is how bullies act. Take your dental appointment as scheduled. Tell the boss about it next time you see him. Your accident is a separate issue from the dental appointment. You will be taking days off to find another job.
With only 3 weeks on a job, you will not need to list this place on your resume.
