Question: How long does a job give you in advance till you start it?

I am trying to move across the USA, from wisconsin to utah. But the problem is I need a job b4 I go down there! My friend works at walmart, he has asked his manager and he said its a good chance id get in if i was already down there and ready to start whenever but I cant get a month in advance notice. Is there jobs that will give you a month-month and a half till you actually start? I just dont want to go down there, find out i cant get it then have to move back to wisconsin. Possibly real companies such as coca cola, semco, etc. would do something like that.

Please help me, thanks

Answer:

In today's job market you will have a hard time finding a company that is willing to wait 4-6 weeks for a needed employee to start as there are 5-10 good potential employees for every job opening.

You can always NEGOTIATE your start date AFTER you've been offered the job. Sometimes the answer is no, but usually they'll work with you.

It depends on the job. I was offered a job on November 17, 2011 that doesn't begin until July 9, 2012 since I'm in school (what is that, almost 8 months?). I wouldn't have taken a job that began before June. I think hourly-wage jobs tend to offer much shorter lead times than salaried jobs.
