Question: Do new employers have to honor pre booked holidays? - Yahoo Answers
My sister started a new job a month ago. Her employer never asked about pre booked holidays but now she is trying to take a week off and her manager said she cant have it off as she has already done the rota for that week. The holiday was booked a year ago and is paid for and no possibility of a refund. Do they have to honor it, or are they within their rights to refuse?
That is something she should have mentioned/asked during the interview. The employer does not have to honor any vacation request. While vacation is given by most companies approval of time off is usually dependent upon company needs and available personnel to cover the empty position.
It's not the employers responsibility to ask about pre-booked holidays, if your sister didn't want to lose the holiday she should have told the employer, common sense really. Whenever you start a new position you should always make your employer aware of something you already have booked within the first week of starting the job otherwise what has happened to your sister will happen and no fault will lie with the NHS at all.
Here is another thumbs down. Sorry but in the UK employers do not have to honour holidays. It was up to her to tell them at interview.
Your sister never volunteered the information. How can she expect to simply jump in with a leave request just weeks into her job? If the holiday was genuinely already booked how can she have not thought to mention it at her interview. Your sister is entirely to blame for her situation
Employers are not required to honor pre booked holidays. Most new employees start off with zero holidays. Your sisters employer is well within their rights to refuse to let her have time off. It is not the employers problem that your sister booked her holiday a year in advance and cannot get a refund. The bottom line is your sister was hired to work. If she cannot provide the coverage needed she will be replaced with someone else. I would not ask for vacation time one month into a job if I wanted to keep my job.
They do have to honor pre booked holiday however she has to of told her employer prior to her starting at the company. As it is a month later the company does not have to honor her holiday request. sorry to break the bad news xx
No, they don't. That's on your sister for not mentioning it at the time of hire.
